Hello my Foodie Friends.  Happy start to the summer!  With summer, comes entertainment and happy times with our family and friends.  One of my wife’s favorite times is to enjoy the creative Martini’s made by one of our good friends. The classic Martini is a cocktail that dates back to the 1880’s made with “dry” vermouth.  The popularity of the Martini emerged in the 1950’s with the addition of gin to it, and vodka in the 1970’s.  Product placement in…
Throughout his nomadic life, one thing has remained consistent for Mark Gallucci: his love for baking.  That passion drove him to start his one-man operation, Middle Grove Bakehouse, originating in the town of the same name, just west of Saratoga Springs. Gallucci is among the new Wednesday vendors at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, where he offers an array of homemade baguettes, sourdough and whole wheat breads, as well as a sour cream coffee cake.  Gallucci has been a baker with…
Hello my foodie friends. It looks like the nice weather has finally arrived and has stayed!!  The season between Memorial Day and Labor Day brings the opportunity to host many outside events.  Having a picnic with family and friends on a beautiful day can be a time that creates those unforgettable moments and memories that last a life time.   Having or attending a picnic remains one of my favorite things to do during the summer.  This stems back to…
Count me among the 95 percent of home gardeners who want to grow tomatoes – and among the many who count on the expertise of the veteran Saratoga Farmers’ Market vegetable plant growers to help me do it. When I shopped for tomato plants in mid-May, I wanted an heirloom variety that would produce large tasty fruits for my favorite tomato sandwiches. Hybrids are bred so that the plants are more disease resistant and higher producing. The fruits also have…
Hello my Foodie Friends !! This past Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer. We would like to thank all who have either served or are currently serving our country for their service. Both my father and father-in-law served our country. My father served in WWII fighting on the beaches of Normandy; my father-in-law served 22 years in the army, training and commanding young recruits. My mother was a Rosie the Riveter and lost 3 of her fingers in…
My husband and I are slowly creating a mushroom garden. We filled two oak logs with oyster mushroom spawn in 2015. After harvesting a handful of mushrooms that fall, we added more logs last summer, to grow shiitake and lion’s mane.  This spring, we are adding wine cap and cinnamon caps with different methods. We purchased two bags of wine cap spawn from Bobby Chandler of Mariaville Mushroom Men at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, and following a diagram he drew…
Hello my Foodie Friends! So many of our customers come in requesting a valuable kitchen tool – the  Food Processor! The reason is that Foodies can make many meals with precision and ease!  My mother-in-law Marie loves hers and we are always surprised at the dishes she whips up.  Paula and I have been trying to eat a little healthier so Marie found this great recipe for hummus on the Breville website and she used her Sous Chef 12 to…
Growing asparagus might be like raising a child. You plant it once. You nurture its tender shoots, and then you watch it grow so fast that you can barely harvest it fast enough.  For farmers, asparagus requires patience and an intense amount of labor. It also brings unending joy. “It’s really something special,” says Christine, of Saratoga Apple, who sells asparagus at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market from early May through June. “As a perennial, its roots produce every year.” Unlike…
